Dr. Shawn George

BSc, MD, FRCPC

I was born in Hamilton, Ontario, but spent most of my early childhood in the Toronto area. At age 12 my family relocated to Vancouver which I’ve called home ever since. After graduating from Vancouver College High School, I was able to attend the University of Southern California and completed a dual degree in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering in 1996. I worked for a year as a biomedical engineer before acceptance to medical school at UBC, graduating in 2002. I remained in Vancouver for my Pediatrics residency based at BC Children’s Hospital which I completed in 2006, including a year as Chief Resident.

Prior to joining Fairmont Pediatrics, I worked as a Clinical Assistant at the BC Children’s & Women’s Neonatal ICU, helping to shape my future career greatly. I spent another year as part of the staff of the BCCH General Pediatric Clinic where I was able to share my passion for community pediatrics with medical students and residents. I joined Fairmont Pediatrics in 2008 and have enjoyed caring for children of all age groups but have maintained a strong interest in neonatal care. I am involved in UBC’s Pediatric Residency Program as a member of the Resident Training Committee. I am also Medical Director of the BCCH Chieng Family Medical Day Unit, and the Chair of the Children’s and Women’s Infection Control Committee, and I am a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UBC Department of Pediatrics.

My wife and I are blessed with two daughters and a loyal and yappy Shih-Tzu. My family’s personal experience with raising a young child with autism has dramatically added to my career path in recent years. I have learned so much from many amazing families who have travelled this road before me, and aspire to grow in the role of an autism advocate in the future.

As a family we are fond of eating, travelling, running, and spending time with our extended family and friends. I am an occasional (hack) golfer, an admitted movie and sci-fi nerd and a passionate sports fan, especially for my favourite teams (the Canucks, the Seahawks, the USC Trojans, and the Toronto Blue Jays) – so be gentle with the teasing after a loss, please.

As part of my nerdiness, I have a pretty decent collection of Star Wars memorabilia, some of which is in my office.
